Rose-Marie [1936] [DVD]Jeanette MacDonald (actor) Nelson Eddy (actor)
Format: all-region dvd (worldwide) Runtime: 111 min Quality: Excellent
Admittedly, the phenomenally successful 1930s musicals of America's Sweethearts, Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy, creak mightily now, but there is still abundant fun in this loose adaptation of the Otto Harback-Oscar Hammerstein II-Rudolf Friml-Herbert Stothart operetta combined here with a manhunt melodrama.
Opera singer MacDonald falls in love with Canadian Mountie Nelson while trying to shield her ne'er-do-well fugitive kid brother Jimmy Stewart from the lawman's dogged pursuit. A highlight is the fabled twosome's duet of Indian Love Call.
Watch, too, for a brief appearance by eager-to-please newcomer David Niven as Rose Marie's would-be suitor. |
