Bored with his perfect wife and son, an insurance agent falls for a charmer with tragic results in this excellent adult drama, which takes film noir into the world of middle-class domesticity. Unlike Fred MacMurray's character in Double Indemnity, this agent (Dick Powell) is basically honest, but that doesn't stop his momentary philandering leading to deceit and murder.

Lizabeth Scott excelled in such roles as the seductive adventuress, and Raymond Burr is superbly sleazy as the villain of the piece. Andre De Toth maintains a tense pace in a film with a surprisingly modern view of the American Dream turned sour.
