Mother is a Freshman [1949] [DVD]

This utterly charming Loretta Young vehicle has a very silly plot but is so ravishingly filmed in rich and garish 1940s Technicolor that it hardly matters if mother Loretta or daughter Betty Lynn ends up with charmer Van Johnson.

Veteran director Lloyd Bacon, responsible for 42nd Street, just lets the laughs fall where they may, and there's a nice supporting turn from the one-time king of the megaphone, former heart-throb Rudy Vallee. Today this might seem a shade twee, but it's still wholesome fun.
