Dream Boat [1952] [DVD]Clifton Webb (actor) Ginger Rogers (actor)
Format: all-region dvd (worldwide) Runtime: 1h 20m Quality: Digital 4:3 b/w
This very funny satire on the early days of television was made when TV was a novelty newcomer and not yet a threat to cinemas. Ginger Rogers is delightful as a silent-movie queen who revives her popularity by presenting her old movies on TV, greatly annoying her former co-star Clifton Webb, now ensconced in "the groves of Academe".
It was particuarly topical in its day, as back then MGM was still holding out against showing its classics on TV and the best bits are the re-creations of the silent movies. Rogers and Webb are particularly fetching as their younger selves, while Elsa Lanchester is a joy as Webb's lustful superior. |
