This remake of Gallant Lady (1934), which starred Ann Harding and Clive Brook, now stars Barbara Stanwyck and Herbert Marshall in the story of an unwed mother who sacrifices her child but then wants him back.
Unfortunately, despite the ever-admirable Stanwyck and all the ingredients for a delicious wallow, the movie is directed by Sidney Lanfield with such a heavy overlay of treacle and unsubtle use of close-ups that it ends up an inferior and uninvolving example of the genre. |
