A Matter of Innocence [1967] [DVD]

A soft-centred adaptation (by Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall) of Noël Coward's harder-edged short story about the transformation from ugly duckling to swan of diffident young Polly (Hayley Mills), thanks to the accidental death of her wealthy aunt (Brenda de Banzie) in the swimming pool of a Singapore hotel.

Mills is agreeably fresh, although hardly plain enough at the beginning, and Guy Green's direction of this pleasantly escapist but unmemorable film is helped by some attractive locations, Trevor Howard as Polly's unconventional uncle, and the attractive Indian actor Shashi Kapoor who provides the romantic interest.
